INTERVIEW: TO AN END Talk new music, inspirations and more

To An End is a metal-core band from Melbourne. We got the chance to talk to the band about their new music, inspirations and more.

As a metal-core band, how did your sound conspire?

We have such a wide range of influences between each member and put together, it forms an overall metalcore sound. We think that it'll evolve and go in deeper directions as time goes on.

What song off of Redefine came together seamlessly?

I would say that Wasteland was a surprisingly easy song that came about, from both the music to the melodies. Most of what ended up in the song were quick 'in the moment' ideas and parts.

Follow up question, which song would you say was the hardest to write?

The closing song, Collide, was probably the most challenging given it was a completely different style to the rest of the album. But like most things, getting through the challenges meant a great end result. We think it was a great way to finish a diverse collection of songs throughout the album.

You’re told that you’re going to be stranded on a deserted island for a year and are allowed to bring only one album, what would you bring?

That is a really tough one! It would be out of something that I personally never get sick of to something like Tool – Aenima, Alice In Chains – Black Gives Way to Blue, Machine Head – The Blackening, Deftones – White Pony.

Overall, what is your writing process like?

For REDEFINE, the music writing process was done by myself and then Al and I worked on finalizing the demos with lyrics and melodies. We then completed the picture with some amazing session players/guest spots and managed an collection of 12 songs! We feel the next album will start in a similar way however, there will be very large focus on a band effort to make sure the process is organic.

What’s the most embarrassing thing that you’re willing to admit?

I really like In Flames' album Siren Charms.

Do you have any guilty pleasures?

Musically, I think each member has plenty of guilty pleasures and most of those are a badge of honor now!

If you never formed this band, what would you be doing instead of music?

We'd all be doing similar things, just without the music! Unfortunately we aren't in a spot to make music a full time job, so we just fit it in around real-life obligations. It's nice to have music there for balance.

Where do you go to find inspiration when you’re feeling uninspired?

Inspiration can come from anywhere really. Musically, ideas can come out of nowhere by just sitting down playing guitar and/or via a particular theme for a song such as fast, slow, melodic etc. Lyrically, it is mostly based on personal experiences but can be simply telling a story.

Who is your biggest supporter?

The people the closest to us are the biggest supporters of what we do. And we also have some amazing fans and friends in bands. We are all in this together, so it's great to help each other out.
